Design Development.

Task 11:

This week's research tasks require a deeper critical reflection and a demonstration of our thinking and working processes. The focus is on carefully considering our target audience and key stakeholders. We must ask questions such as, "Is the outcome of our project likely to engage these people?" and "Which areas might we develop to ensure that our final piece is communicating effectively?"

In response to the first question, I sought feedback by sharing my project with a few individuals. Their responses were overwhelmingly positive, expressing fascination with the outcome and noting how my project transformed the seemingly ordinary into something remarkable. They also mentioned how the project positively influenced their perspective.

For the second question, I decided to enhance engagement by incorporating additional design elements, such as the typographic zine and guess cards, beyond the requirements of the brief. This decision was made to provide people with more interactive and engaging components.

Learning Objectives:

  1. LO1: Research — Select and deploy appropriate research methodologies to inform the needs within a project.

  2. LO4: Distil — Position a creative strategic insight that has been distilled and refined through an informed investigation.

  3. LO5: Imagine — Deliver appropriate and innovative ideas that embrace risk, have contemporary relevance and question the boundaries of the discipline.

  4. LO6: Make — Select and utilise relevant tools, skills and technologies in the delivery, iteration and sustainable production of an outcome.

  5. LO7: Collaborate — Demonstrate inclusive and empathetic strategies to plan and execute a project across distributed collaborative situations.

  6. LO8: Design — Realise a final solution that evidences its strategic journey and clear relationship between form and function.

  7. LO9: Communicate — Communicate effectively in a range of contexts and situations to specialist and non-specialist audiences.

Set of Posters:

This impactful set of posters is meticulously crafted to encapsulate the essence and visual narrative of the endeavor. Each poster serves as a compelling representation of the unique concepts and aesthetics explored in “Shift,” aiming to engage and resonate with the audience.

Website:

The Shift website is designed with the purpose of raising social awareness about the significance of daily overlooked items. It serves as a showcase, revealing the step-by-step creation of the Shift typeface from scratch, highlighting the transformative journey from nothing to something meaningful. The website delves into the world of appreciation, urging visitors to shift their focus from what they lack to the abundance of things around them. It aims to inspire a shift in perspective, encouraging people to find creativity and value in the seemingly mundane aspects of everyday life.

Contextual Research:

The Load Shedding African typeface is a unique and culturally resonant font inspired by the power outages, or “load shedding,” experienced in Africa. The font captures the essence of flickering lights during these outages, with irregular shapes and dynamic lines that mimic the unpredictability of the power disruptions. This innovative typeface reflects the resilience and creativity of communities facing challenges. Personally, the Load Shedding African typeface has inspired me with its ability to turn adversity into art. The blend of form and meaning encouraged me to consider how design can convey powerful narratives and emotions, transforming ordinary experiences into compelling visual expressions.
